Study finds pathogenic microbes growing on 50% of retainers

Researchers at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, London have found that insufficient cleaning could allow build-up of microbes on orthodontic retainers.
CAndiida and Staphytlococcus were the organisms not nomally found in the oral cavity. These organisms may be a problem in someone in a compromised immune system. Solution: Hygiene is the key! wash your hands before handling the retainer, brush it upon removal with toothpaste or mouthwash
to keep it clean. A retainer which has been allowed to have microbial growth on it should be professionally cleaned or replaced. Don’t let your dog wear your retainer!
